Adjunct Faculty in Personal Counseling

I provide personal counseling to students and support the Vice President of student services and all of its departments.

Bachelor's Degree: Social Work

My path in life took a while to figure out

1.
I emigrated from the Philippines to the United States and had my 3 children.
2.
I attended Skyline & discovered that I enjoyed working in higher education & wanted to pursue a career that advocates for people because of my own lived experiences—I earned my AS in Paralegal Studies
3.
I transferred to SFSU and earned my BS in criminal justice, a (law) degree that isn't required for my career but has been beneficial for the student discipline aspect of it.
4.
With the research work I've done at SFSU, I made a program for WOC facing mental health struggles and brought that to Skyline, through implementing it into the Women's Mentoring and Leadership Academy
5.
A huge milestone for me as a mom was seeing my children graduate high school and college.
6.
My most recent milestone was earning my master's degree in social work in 2021.

THE NOISE
Messages from Myself:
In my educational journey I was encouraged by my counselors and colleagues to go to school. I felt discouragement from myself because I was a young mom to 3 children and was older than my peers when I initially began my journey of higher education.
How I responded:
I overcame the discouragement I felt within myself with the help of the people around me, my counselors and colleagues, who saw something in me that I didn't see within myself and supported, encouraged, and pushed me to continue pursuing higher education.

Taking into consideration all the obstacles I've encountered in my life, the biggest piece of advice I can give everyone in overcoming their obstacles is reaching out and asking for help.
I encountered rejection when applying for a job position because the person who ended up getting the position had a master's degree & at the time, I didn't. I used this rejection as fuel for myself to go back to school and earn my master's degree.
